Since China was poverty-stricken, income was low and it was difficult to sustain oneself while also supporting their family. However, in Canada, there was a need for labourers. The Canadian Pacific Railway was under construction and the country required cheap workers. Although they would be paid less than their white counterparts, they would still earn $1 to $2.50 per day (University of British Columbia, Work: Railway 2). They would also have to pay for their own food, clothes, and transportation, among other things, leaving them with very little money to send back to their family. However, this was still more than they earned in China.

In comparison to China, Canada had a much safer political state. While there were wars raging on in China, Canada was relatively peaceful. The last major war that occurred in Canada was the War of 1812, which was mainly fought in Eastern and Central North America (see map). Disputes still happened between Canadians and First Nations people, but they did not cause as much harm as the peasant wars in China.
